Research and experience shows that alligning expectations between the supervisor and the PhD student is a crucial step for a sucessfull PhD project.
1: Academic expectations. Discussing and finding a common ground for the academic ambitions in the PhD project is something that is often overlooked or discussed to late in the proces. So our advice is to:
- Early on - discuss the scope for publications (outlet, status, number and so on)
- Discuss external research collaboration - are you planning to go abroad?
- What are you aiming for with this project?
2: Practical aspects. This may seem like a minor element in a PhD project but it can be a source for discussion and a large mental load if the lines are blurry or the expectations are not alligned.
- Discuss your meetings - what will the setup be, how often should you meet, will it be online, and so on.
- Discuss your roles - Who keeps track of agreed upon actions, who has the lead on some of the administrative tasks, who is responsible for resumes during the meeting?
- Will you be able to work from home, are there fixed office hours in your research group?
Allthough it may seem daring to have these talks with your supervisor it will benefit you and the project in the long run.
